Born and raised near Vancouver B.C., Matthew is a Lighting, Sound, Projection and Set Designer, as well as a Stage Manager, and Director working actively in the theatre community in B.C. He began his education in theatre more than 8 years working with his high school and local theatre companies. It became clear to him very early that he wanted to work professionally in Theatre. When Matthew graduated high school, he went on to theatre school at the University of the Fraser Valley where he graduated with a BA in theatre specializing in Design and Production. While at UFV Matthew has designed and been a technician on many shows including Lighting Design for UFV's production of Argonautika, Sound Design for their production of Twelfth Night, Projection Design for their production of Julius Caesar and Scenographic Design (Including Lights, Set, Projection and Props) for their production of Possible Worlds. Throughout Matthew's education and work in the community, he has had the opportunity of learning from some of the most talented theatre professionals in the business, who have been able to teach him so much. Matthew is now at UBC completing an MFA in Theatre Design and Production while trying to expand his business and learn new methods from practitioners that work and teach at UBC.
While attending University, Matthew has worked extensively with Design and Technologies. He has also completed work on the Theories and History of Theatre. This has allowed him to look at performance through the lens of theatre practitioners that have come before us. By using knowledge of these theories and adapting them he has been able to create his own unique style of Design, that he applies to his work in Theatre.
While working in the theatre community Matthew has also had many other opportunities. This includes, Stage Managing for Chambers Theatrical Society and working as a technician for local theatre companies. Currently, he is writing his Master's thesis on UBC's production of Timothy Findlay's The Wars, he is also assistant designing The Arts Club's Production of Noises Off and Set Designing Gallery 7's Production of Secret Garden.
